THE World Health Organisation (WHO) is determined to completely eradicate polio from the remaining three countries where the disease is still prevalent in the world by the end of 2013.

Speaking at the weekend at the inauguration of the February round of Immunisation Plus Days (IPDs) in Bauchi State, held at the Federal Low Cost Health Centre in Bauchi, a consultant to WHO, Dr Abu Dahiru, stated the world was waiting for Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan to eradicate polio, adding that the world body was determined to put an end to the scourge of polio.

Dr Dahiru declared that determined to make the world polio-free, WHO was doing everything possible to ensure that the fight against polio was won in Nigeria and the two other countries, adding that only concerted efforts by every stakeholder could ensure this, this year.

According to him, for children to be properly procted against polio, there was the need to ensure routine immunisation, submitting that that was the only way parents could secure their children against the disease.

He advocated the involvement of ward, village heads and traditional rulers in the state government’s efforts aimed at kicking the disease out of the state by sensitising and mobilising people in their communities on the importance of making their children and wards available for the immunisation.
