The Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Amina Sambo, said her NGO, `I Care Women and Youth initiative’, would conduct cataract surgery for 500 people in Bauchi state.
Sambo, who was represented by the Secretary, Board of Trustees of the NGO, Col. Shehu Yahaya (Rtd), said this at the inauguration of the free eye care treatment on Saturday in Bauchi.
She said that according to the outcome of the National Blindness Survey, North- East was identified with highest prevalence of cataract in the country.
According to her, this informs the NGO’s decision to expand its scope of coverage from Kaduna state to North East region.
“The eye camp will provide free eye care services to the people in Bauchi state; this includes eye screening, consultation, drugs, correctional eye glasses and surgery.
“One area that will receive attention is that of the eye care, this is in realisation of the importance of eyesight to the health and wellbeing of individuals.
“Eye does not only improve productivity, but also ensures self reliance,” she said.
She said that the free eye camp would last for five days and urged the people to be peaceful as no meaningful development could take place without peace.
In his speech, Gov. Isa Yuguda of Bauchi state, represented by the Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, Malam Yahaya Miya, expressed gratitude for the gesture of the wife of the Vice President.
The governor noted that it would also go a long way in contributing to the health care services in the state.
He urged people in the state to make judicious use of the opportunity in order to maintain a healthy sight as it was an important sense organ in the human body.
