The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Terrence McCulley, has described Bauchi State as the potential food basket of Northern Nigeria considering the vast and arable land that God endowed the area with.

He also commended the commitment of the Isa Yuguda-led administration to revamping agriculture in the state.

According to a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Bauchi State Governor, Ishola Michael Adeyemi, the American Ambassador stated this at a recent dinner while welcoming the Nigerian delegation to the 2013 AG Connect Agric Expo at the International Trade Centre in Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

McCulley said his last visit to Bauchi State was a real eye-opener to the fact that the area is blessed with natural resources that need to be harnessed and developed.

He declared that having the largest number of delegation members to the Expo has confirmed the seriousness of the Yuguda administration to the development of the agriculture sector, and assured listeners that he would assist in ensuring that required investment was secured for the state and others interested in boosting the sector.

McCulley, who said Nigeria has everything to be self-reliant in food production, lamented that agriculture was neglected in the past, but expressed confidence that with the seriousness and commitment shown by the present administration in revamping the sector, it is only a matter of time before the country becomes the largest exporter of farm produce globally.

The Ambassador also assured listeners that his country would continue to support trade and investments in Nigeria considering that cordial diplomatic and bilateral relationships that exist between the two states, and pointed out that with a little more commitment Nigeria can become the leader in food production in the not-too-distant future.

He then urged the Nigerian delegation to the AG Connect Agric Expo to use the opportunity to engage different companies and businessmen in useful discussions that may eventually lead to huge investments in the agriculture sector of Nigeria, because, according to him, one of the areas that need attention and easily develop any country is agriculture, which guarantees stable food production.

The delegation had visited various places of industrial interest in the US particularly in the areas of agriculture development and housing, which are the two critical areas to development and self-substance.
