| May 30, 2012 More

Traditional Medicine sellers at the ongoing Bauchi State Trade Fair on Traditional Medicine say business is not as anticipated.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Bauchi, the herbalists decried low patronage of their products.

They attributed the development to inadequate publicity about the fair, the prevailing economic situation in the country, and the farming season.

One of the herbalists, Malam Mohammed Ukasha, said that although he never anticipated any brisk business, he did not expect the situation to be as bad.

“We are not making any sales. People are not patronising us at all. The situation is such that I am finding it difficult to feed myself because the little money made have been spent on feeding”, he said.

Another herbalist, Danjuma Wanzam, who narrated the same ordeal, blamed the the situation on inadequate arrangement by the Trade Fair Organising Committee.

According to him, the publicity given to the fair is inadequate. He said that most people were still not aware of the event, one week after it started.

Other herbalists, who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, said that they regretted participating in the fair.

One of them ascribed the poor patronage to the prevailing economic situation in the country and the farming season that had just set in.

“People do not have money to spend. Besides, it has started raining now and attention has shifted to farm,” said one of the harbalists.

Meanwhile, Malam Nuhu Waziri, the Chairman, Bauchi State Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association, said that the fair was designed to promote research and encourage professionalism.

According to him, the fair is aimed at encouraging cross-fertilistion of ideas and practitioners are expected to imbibe scientific ways of processing their medicines.

He said that more than 400 Traditional Medicine Practitioners from the 20 local government areas of the state were participating in the fair. (NAN)
