Six must-see places in Bauchi

The state is popularly known for the Yankari Game Reserve. 

Bauchi State, in north-east Nigeria, is a well-known tourism hub for its warm spring and game reserve. These and other interesting places in the state would be fun to visit either alone or with family and friends over a weekend or, to fully explore every location, on a long holiday.

1. The Emir’s Palace

The Emir of Bauchi’s palace was built by the famed Babban Gwani, real name Muhammadu Durugu; a 19th century master builder from Zaria. He built mosques and palaces in Kano, Katsina, Bauchi and Zaria.

The palace in Bauchi is indeed an edifice to behold. It was constructed in mud about 200 years ago. The beautiful arched balconies and windows are complemented by the nave-like arches within the palace itself.  Yan 6

The emir still lives and holds court in the place. It has been updated with modern touches like air conditioning.

Visitors can go around the palace and even take pictures.

2. Tafawa Balewa Tomb

The tomb of the late Prime Minister of Nigeria, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, is located along the Ran Road in Bauchi.

Balewa was famously assassinated in the 1966 coup that led to the Nigeria civil war.

With a large tower-like structure in front of it, it is indeed a sight to behold. It is also a museum which houses the personal effects of the late Balewa, including his wrist watch, radio and cap, displayed in glass cases.Tomb

3. Unity Park

The Unity Park along Ahmadu Bello way in Bauchi, the state capital, is one of the most visited leisure places in the city.

It has a multipurpose indoor sports hall, open theatre and a shopping complex. It is often crowded on weekends and holidays.

Unity Park can be accessed through Murtala Muhammed Way, in the heart of the town.Yank 6

4. Shehu Azare Park

The Shehu Azare Park is located along the Adamu Jumba road in Bauchi Town.
It has a scenic beauty, with is lovely well kept lawn, colourful flowers and cement benches for picnics. It is a great place to take a book to, settle under a tree and enjoy a quiet, peaceful afternoon.

5. The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, with its Olympic-size swimming pool, a multi-purpose indoor games hall and a games village is a place where people visit for leisure and sports. Yan 4

It is located along Ibo street by Murtala Mohammed Way, Bauchi.

6. Yankari National Park and Game Reserve

The Yankari National Park and Game Reserve is situated about 115km south-east of Bauchi Town in Alkaleri Local Government.

Its attractions include a wide variety of animals including the African Bush Elephant, olive baboon, patas monkey, lions, the African buffalo, and Hippopotamus, among others.

There is also the Wikki natural warm spring with excellent bathing facilities, Marshall Cave and fish ponds.

Yankari Game Reserve, although located in Bauchi, is one of Nigeria’s landmark tourist locations. The Park is reputed to be the first of its kind in West Africa and attracts visitors/tourists from different parts of the world.Yan 1
