Science and industrial equipment: Wada urges FG to stop importing science equipment

| May 23, 2012 More

Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State has called on the Federal Government to ban importation of science and industrial equipment into the country because they could be produced locally. Governor Wada, who said this when the acting Director General of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Dr Mohammed Sanni Haruna, called on him in Lokoja, cautioned that unless the Federal Government stops importation of science and industrial equipment, millions of dollars would continue to be wasted on machines that could be produced locally by NASENI.

The Kogi governor is the second state executive to advocate for total ban on importation of industrial equipment in the last two months.

Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State had, during a courtesy visit to NASENI, called for outright ban on government’s importation of science equipment since the agency has the capacity to produce high quality equipment with the decision expected to save foreign exchange for the country.

A statement from NASENI yesterday said Captain Wada expressed satisfaction that “right in Nigeria there are local engineering capacities like NASENI that could give technical support to the socio-economic transformation of the country.

On solar panel modules production by NASENI, the governor said he was pleased with the agency’s capability, adding that the beauty of solar energy in Nigeria was that there is abundant sunlight in the country. “I am very glad that we have the capacity to manufacture and install same, so I can assure you that the state government will latch onto the opportunity of your capacity as we go along in this collaboration particularly in the health sector.”

Captain Wada also noted that since the agency also has capability in small hydro power for electricity generation, his state will be looking forward to working with the agency in providing rural electrification to some villages.
