Nigeria: Bauchi Teachers Suspend Strike

Bauchi — The Bauchi chapter of the Association of Secondary School Teachers has suspended its indefinite strike following a resolution reached by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Academic Staff Union of secondary Schools (ASSUS) and the Bauchi State Ministry of Education.

The teachers announced the suspension of the strike in a communiqué at the end of a meeting by the concerned parties. The communiqué was signed by the state commissioner of education Ibrahim Aminu, ASSUS chairman Abdullahi Mohammed Tanko, Ag ASSUS secretary Bala Ayuba, TUC chairman Mohammed Usman and TUC secretary Sulisma G Lemuel.

Part of the agreement, according to the communiqué, was that the criteria for the appointment of junior officers would be worked out, such that there should be no inferiority complex. Appointment of contract officers as regards their conversion would be applied in accordance with the state circular while payment of resettlement allowance and disturbance allowance should be referred to the office of the head of service, it said.

It said recommendations of the Chiroman Bauchi-led committee would be looked into with a view to implementing them while the ministry of education had pledged to withdraw all legal suits pending in courts against the union for the sake of unity and progress of the ministry.
