Nigeria: Bauchi Govt, Teachers Disagree Over Closure of School

| May 22, 2012 More

Bauchi โ€” The Bauchi State government and teachers of the School of Management and Applied Studies (SMAS) of the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi, have disagreed over the closure of the school.

At the weekend, the state government ordered the closure of the school, but the teachers under the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic chapter, called on the students to remain in the school, saying normal academic activities would go on.

Last month, government ordered the students to move to the permanent site of the school at the School of Engineering in Wuntin Dada, so that it can build a specialist hospital at the school’s location, but teachers and students opposed the move, citing lack of adequate class rooms and accommodation at Wuntin Dada, as reasons.

A senior lecturer of the school, who spoke to newsmen said, “Government summoned a meeting with all stake holders, where they agreed that it would build adequate class room blocks, hostels and provide all the infrastructures required at the School of Engineering before relocating the school, and government intended to carry out the project in phases”.

He lamented that government was yet to build a single class room block, yet it ordered the demolition of structures at SMAS.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Ishola Michael Adeyemi told Daily Trust that government shut down the school to avoid a breakdown of law and order. But the ASUP chairman and secretary, Mahmood S kobi and Comrade Abdullahi Yalwa, said the directive for the closure of the school contravened the agreement reached between government and stakeholders. He said the state’s commissioner for education misinformed the government on the realities on the ground. When contacted, the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Aminu Ibrahim said, “Presently, I am attending a meeting at the Government House, and I will call you after the meeting”.

He was yet to do that at the time of filing this report.
