IN what looks like a morale booster for the state’s athletes to the 18th National Sports Festival, Eko 2012, Bauchi State governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, at the weekend rewarded the athletes that did the state proud at the last sport festival in Port Harcourt, Garden City 2011 Games, doling out N5.7million in the process.

Apart from giving a cash reward of N150,000 to each of the gold medallists, the governor also gave them automatic employment in the state civil service, while silver and bronze medallists got cash reward of N100,000 and N50,000 for their efforts at making the state proud.

Speaking on the eve of the departure of Team Bauchi for Eko 2012, Governor Yuguda urged the state’s 268 athletes to strive hard with a view to surpassing their Garden City 2011 Games’ performance, adding that they must be disciplined and focused in order to succeed at the sport festival in Lagos.

He admonished the athletes and their officials to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the period of Eko 2012 fiesta, adding that they should accept the decisions of judges and officials of their various events.

Meanwhile, KOGI State governor, Captain Idris Wada (retd) has warned the state’s athletes to avoid the use of drug to stimulate their natural talents.

Wada in a goodwill message to the contingent from Kogi to the National Sports Festival, warned that any athlete caught in the act of drug taking would be punished.

He charged the contingent to be good ambassadors of the state while in Lagos.

The governor assured that those who excel at the sports festival would be rewarded.

He described sport as a strong instrument for national unity, promising to continue to promote sporting activities in the state.
