Lawmaker Accuses JTF Of Extrajudicial Killings In Bauchi

| August 2, 2012 More

A lawmaker in the Bauchi  State House of Assembly has  accused the Joint Task Force (JTF) of extra-judicial killings at  Lere District of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The member representing Lere/Bula constituency, Hon. Iliyasu Ibrahim Zwall made the allegation in a chat with newsmen in his office, at the Bauchi State Assembly complex yesterday.

Zwall who is also the Chairman of the Security Committee in the House said the soldiers posted to Tafawa Balewa to quell the crisis had ended up  constituting obstacle to peace in the area because of human rights abuse.

According to him, in Lere road block, the JTF allegedly killed one Fulani man simply because somebody reported to them that he stole their cow.

The lawmaker said that addressing the rampant cases of the abuse by the men of the JTYF had been a huge task.

He said: “Even after the people concern had written severally to the government and the GOC at Jos because the JTF are not actually answerable to the state command of the Nigerian Army.

“They are answerable to the GOC in Jos, so that is where the problem is and unfortunately nothing is being done about that and they just go on rampage anytime they want and they just kill people anytime they want unnecessarily and obviously there is need for the government to look into this thing.

“You know virtually the state Assembly cannot take any measure against the JTF except the national headquarters or the office of the GOC does that.”

All efforts to get the reaction of the JTF command in Jos  proved abortive  at the time of filing this report.
