Lack of Loan Hinders GES in Bauchi, Nasarawa

| December 16, 2012 More

Agro-dealers and state officials in Bauchi and Nasarawa states say refusal of commercial banks to give their members loans is limiting their ability to meet the demand of the farmers registered under the Growth Enhancement Support Scheme for fertilizer.

The coordinator of the programme under Bauchi State government, Abdullahi Ibrahim, said agro-dealers couldn’t supply the required quantity of fertilizer to the various redemption centers in time because the banks refused to give them the loans that will enable them to purchase the fertilizer.

His Nasarawa State counterpart, Mr Naptali Jarumi, said commercial banks almost frustrated the programme in the state as they didn’t give loans to the agro-dealers.

Also, farmers in the two states decried the complications associated with the e-wallet component of the GES programme.

Hajiya Ladi Abdulkadir, a female farmer in Bauchi, says she preferred the voucher paper system because out of about 30 women farmers that she works with, she is the only one with a cell phone.
