THE chairman of Bauchi State Pension Board, Alhaji Danladi Abubakar, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to facilitate payment of contributory pension to states of the federation, in order for them to settle backlog of pension arrears and gratuities of retiring workers in their respective states.

This is even as he disclosed that the Federal Government was yet to pay Bauchi State the sum of N2.3billion local government pension contribution for retired local government workers in the state.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday, in Bauchi, Alhaji Abubakar lamented the plight of pensioners across the country, saying that, “the Federal Government is supposed to pay five per cent of the pension, but the money is being accumulated due to non-regular payment of the contribution by the Federal Government as and when due.”

He said that retirees, who had served their fatherland meritoriously ought to start enjoying the fruit of their labour as soon as they retired from active service, saying that, many of them were wallowing in abject poverty without getting their entitlements.

“It is very pathetic to see a soldier, who gallantly served the nation wallowing in poverty, awaiting his benefit after retirement from active service,” he said.

He expressed displeasure at the trillions of naira being embezzled by a few corrupt officials from the pension funds, while pensioners across the country were dying.

According to him, the board was currently paying monthly pension of over N100 million from the N141 million it was receiving monthly, submitting that the balance could not settle outstanding gratuities and pension arrears of pensioners in the state.
