Gunmen on the rampage raze 2 pry schools, telecoms mast in Bauchi

LESS than a month after some gunmen attacked and razed down some buildings at the Government Girls Secondary School, Yana, the headquarters of Shira Local Government Area of Bauchi State, some unknown gunmen, again, Wednesday night, went on rampage, burning down two primary schools and MTN telecommunication mast at Shadarki village in Darazo Local Government Area of the state.

A five-year-old girl was also burnt to death in the Yana attack, just as staff quarters, school bus and an eight-room block rank and file quarters were all burnt down, while a branch of a first generation bank in the town was attack with large sum of money carted away.

MTN, Globacom and Etisalat masts in the town were also destroyed during the Yana attack.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the Darazo attack took place between 10.00 and 1.00 p.m. on Wednesday, during which the attackers razed down Shadarki Primary School and Yelwan Darazo Primary School respectively, though no life was lost in the attack.

A resident, who simply identified herself as Zaynab, told the Nigerian Tribune on the telephone that her house was nearby one of the burnt schools, declaring that it was a night of terror for the people the village, as they could not sleep throughout the night.

According to the source, when the attackers arrived, the started shooting sporadically to scare away people and made for the schools and the telecommunication mast.

“When the gunmen arrived, they started shooting sporadically before they went to the schools and the MTN mast in our area and burnt them down. It was a real night of terror for us; no one could sleep throughout the night, as those who stayed behind were afraid that they could come back,” Zaynab, who said she only left Bauchi, the state capital, on Tuesday, for the village on a visit, told the Nigerian Tribune.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Bauchi State police command, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the attack in a statement he made available to journalists in Bauchi, saying  no death was recorded during the over one hour attack.

“On May 14, between 10.00 and 1.00 p.m, unknown gunmen went on rampage at Shadarki village in Darazo Local Government Area of the state and burnt the following structures: MTN mast site T.1137 and the surveillance monitoring site located adjacent to the mast; two primary schools— Shadarki and Yelwan Darazo Primary Schools.

No casualty was recorded,” the PPRO’s statement informed.

He, however, added that the entire surroundings was cordoned by combined security forces, assuring that efforts were being intensified to arrest the perpetrators of the attack.
