Gunmen kill 3 Police in Bauchi

It was another black day for the Bauchi State Police Command Thursday, as they lost three of their men to yet to be identified gunmen while on patrol along Bauchi -Gombe road.

The gunmen made away with three police rifles after opening fire at the policemen.

THISDAY checks revealed that the gunmen attacked the policemen at about 8:49 am.

A competent source at the state police command headquarters who pleaded anonymity said the deceased were two inspectors and a corporal, but he, however, would not reveal their identities.

Our correspondent further gathered that the policemen had just resume duty at the patrol spot when the gun men opened fire killing one inspector and one corporal. The second inspector reportedly died in hospital.

According to reports, a fourth policeman, who narrowly escaped death, ran into the bush with his rifle.

The gunmen, whose number was not ascertain as at the time of filing this report, then snatched the three rifles belonging to the slain policemen.

Confirming the attack to newsmen in his office, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Mohammed Auyo said investigation had been launched with the aim of arresting the attackers.

Auyo, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who said that a team of policemen had combed the scene of the attack in search of the culprits, expressed optimism that the gunmen would be apprehended.

One of the policemen, who was one of those that went to the scene, said the hoodlums were still there before their arrival.

The PPRO solicited for useful information from members of the public that will assist the police in arresting the suspects.

No group has claimed responsibility yet for the attack.

Meanwhile, Bauchi State government has condoled the government and people of Plateau State over the recent flood disaster which claimed many lives as well as properties worth millions of naira describing it as most unfortunate.

A press statement from the Government House signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ishola Michael Adeyemi said that the tragedy which came barely few weeks after the tragic deaths of a number of people in some parts of the state including Late Senator Dantong and Gyang Fulani, Majority Leader of the Plateaus State House of Assembly ‘was shocking and painful’.
