Police say there has been a spate of attacks by unknown gunmen in Bauchi, one of the relatively peaceful states in the northeast.
Police in Bauchi State said unknown gunmen set ablaze some houses in the staff quarters of Government Girls Secondary School, GGSS, Yana, killing a five-year old girl on Sunday.
The police spokesperson in the state, Haruna Mohammed, said on Sunday in Bauchi that the gunmen also burnt a telecommunication mast in the town.
He said they stole a private car belonging to the principal of the school, and assured the public that other students in the school were safe.
The attack came barely a week after gunmen abducted 129 girls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.
It is not clear whether the two attacks on government girls schools are related.
Bauchi State is one of the few relatively peaceful states in Nigeria’s beleaguered northeast.
Police say unknown gunmen attacked the staff quarters of GGSS Yana, Shira Local Government Area of Bauchi State, around 2.30 a.m. on Sunday.
“They set the school bus ablaze; and in the process, a five-year-old girl was killed in the fire while they destroyed the vault of a bank,’’ the spokesperson said.
According to Mr. Mohammed, a combined team of security forces are on the trail of the attackers.
On April 17, the police said a team of security forces foiled an attack by some unknown gunmen on Misau town, Misau Local Government Area of the state.
On April 15 also, the police confirmed that some gunmen snatched two vehicles, marked 206 UN and 139 UN in Soro, Ganjuwa Local Government Area of the state, belonging to the United Nations.
Mr. Mohammed said some suspected armed robbers had recently snatched a vehicle belonging to the Bauchi State Television Authority, marked 04C-04 BA. (NAN)
