Gunmen Attack GGSS Staff Quarters in Bauchi, Kill Five-Year-Old in Bauchi

Unknown gunmen yesterday attacked the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Yana town in Shira local government area of Bauchi State, killing a five-year-old boy and setting ablaze the school’s staff quarters.

The gunmen also razed a police station, three telecom masts, a commercial bank, vehicles and several houses in the town.

The Yana attack is coming barely a week after gunmen abducted 129 girls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State.

LEADERSHIP learnt that when the gunmen stormed the school at about 2.30am, the students were on holiday. The gunmen moved to the staff quarters, but the teachers who were around were said to have fled their homes.

The gunmen, who invaded the town with sophisticated guns and explosive devices, resorted to burning the staff quarters. The five-year-old child, who was said to have been abandoned by his fleeing parents, was burnt to death in one of the houses.

The state police spokesman, Haruna Mohammed confirmed the incident and said that the gunmen also burnt a telecommunication mast belonging to Glo in the town.

He revealed that they stole a car belonging to the principal of the school and assured the public that other students in the school were safe.

Although Bauchi State is not among the northeast states affected by the emergency rule, it has come under attack of recent. On April 15 the police confirmed that some gunmen snatched two vehicles belonging to the United Nations marked 206 UN and 139 UN, in Soro, Ganjuwa local government area of the state.

Also, the police spokesman confirmed that some suspected armed robbers had recently snatched a vehicle belonging to the Bauchi State Television Authority, marked 04C-04 BA.

On April 17, the police said a team of security forces foiled an attack by some unknown gunmen on Misau town, Misau local government area of the state.
