TRAVELLERS on the Bauchi-Jos highway had a hectic time on Sunday, as youths at Tashan Maiturare, near Nabordo in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State held a peaceful demostration on the road, protesting what they called incessant killing of people in the area.

The demonstration followed the killing of two people in an auto crash involving an Opel Vectra car, killing two and injuring two others.

The protesters called on the Bauchi State government to come to their aid in the area, by constructing speed breaks on the highway, with a view to reducing vehicles’ speed while in the area.
The protesting youth, who said they were tired of losing loved ones on daily basis to reckless driving, demanded intervention of the government, in order to save the lives of the people of the area.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the protesters blocked the road, a development which led to traffic logjam on the busy highway, which serves as the gateway to the North-East geopolitical zone of the country.

According to eyewitnesses, the protest took hours before men of the state command of the Nigeria Police arrived at the scene and dispersed the protesters.

Confirming the incident, the state commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Henry Sunday Olatunji, told journalists that five people were involved in the accident from which  two died, two injured, while one escaped unhurt.

According to Olatunji, the accident occurred as a result of overspeeding on the part of the driver, adding that the victims were hit by the car.

The official informed that operatives of the FRSC had taken the remains of the deceased to the mortuary of the Toro General Hospital in Toro, headquarters of the local government, while the injured were also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Confirming the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Hassan Mohammed Auyo, said the youth protested against the rampant accident in the area, adding that “when they blocked the road, the police intervened and opened the road.”
