Flooding: Bauchi Earmarks N25m for Construction of Culverts

| August 3, 2013 More

Bauchi State Government has earmarked N25 million for the construction of culverts in Bauchi township as part of measures to ease flooding.
The Deputy Governor, Alhaji Sagir Sale, announced this on Friday during a visit to the Emir of Bauchi to commiserate with him over the recent flood in the area.
Salesaid that construction of the culverts was aimed at guaranteeing free-flow of water during heavy downpours, adding that some existing culverts would be widened.
“The government has earmarked N25 million for the construction of culverts.
“I am calling on residents of Bauchi to make sure they always clear the drains and gutters to allow for free-flow of water,’’ he said.
Salesaid that the problem was compounded by the nonchalant attitude shown by some persons who built houses on waterways.
He called on the people to desist from such habit, saying it has negative consequences on the environment.
Responding, the Emir, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman, thanked the government for showing concern over the plight of the people.
He said that “traditional institutions in the state will continue to support government’s policies and programmes.’’
It will be recalled that heavy down pour on Wednesday and Thursday caused flooding in many parts of the town, especially in Fadama Mada, Federal Low-Cost Housing, by-pass, and Doctors’ Quarters.
Many of the affected residents have pleaded with the relevant authorities to address the problem.
