Flood wrecks havoc in Bauchi: Nine-year-old killed, over 14 houses destroyed

A heavy down pour in Bauchi Metropolis has sacked many families from their homes and killed a nine year old girl at Shekal Ward.

Dailypost gathered that, earlier today (Tuesday) in the morning, residents of Shekal Ward in Bauchi metropolis blocked a popular Bauchi-Gombe road, saying they will not open the road until the State Government solves the problem of flooding which has destroyed over a hundred houses in the area.

Hajiya Aishatu Mohammed Shekal, who spoke on behalf of the residents said, “The community has been facing these challenges for more than two decades, we have a drainage but it’s too small, so government most come and expand it even if it will touch some houses we don’t mind.

Decrying that, “Whenever the water comes, we would not sleep because it can rise to someone’s shoulders, and capable of destroying property worth millions of Naira.

He added that, “It was only during Governor Ahmed Mu’azu’s regime that the Government assisted us. Now, our population has increased, if Government can expand the culverts along major roads, it will reduce the problem.

According to her, “When it rains, the water comes from Fadaman Mada, Unguwar Abuja and Karofi, which passes through our area, but if there is heavy down power, it will not pass through the small holes in the culverts.It will go back and find its way into our houses”.

A team of mobile police had to be drafted to maintain law and order in the area.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman, Bauchi State Emergency Distribution Committee, Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa Bello said, “The SEMA assessment team has visited Shekal ward in Bauchi metropolis that was badly hit by flood. Preliminary report confirmed the death of a nine year old girl who got drowned and 14 affected houses.

He stated that, “SEMA is assisting the victims with some food items and other needs, while the displaced persons are reported to have moved to their neighbors’ houses”.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Government has ordered the State Environmental Protection Agency to immediately evacuate all the dumped refused on the streets of Shekal and the entire metropolis.
