Flood Wreaks Havoc in Bauchi, Kills 9-Year-Old Girl

Bauchi โ€” A nine-year-old girl reportedly drowned in the flood which occurred following a heavy downpour in Bauchi State. It was gathered that many families were also sacked from their homes.

Residents of Shekal area in Bauchi metropolis and officials of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed the incident.

Chairman of the Bauchi State emergency distribution committee, Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa Bello said “the SEMA assessment team has visited Shekal ward in Bauchi metropolis which was badly hit by the flood. Preliminary report showed that a nine-year-old girl drowned in the flood, while 14 houses were affected. Already, SEMA is assisting victims with food items and other needs”.

Earlier in the morning, residents of Shekal ward in Bauchi State blocked the popular Bauchi-Gombe road, saying they will not open the road until the state government solves the flood problem in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the residents, Hajiya Aishatu Mohammed Shekal said, “We have been facing these problems for more than two decades. We constructed a drainage, but it is too small, government has to expand it. Whenever it rains, we would not be able to sleep because the water. During Ahmed Mu’azu’s regime, the government assisted us, but now our population has increased. If government can expand the culvert along major roads, the problem will reduce”.

Our correspondent reports that a team of mobile police men were drafted to the area to maintain law and order, just as government ordered its agency on environmental protection to evacuate refuse dumped on the streets.
