| June 9, 2012 More

The studio and control room of the Bauchi State Television (BATV) was on Friday gutted by fire, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The inferno which started before the commencement of the Friday prayers was, however, quickly put off by staff of the station on duty.

Men of the state Fire Service and that of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, also assisted to put off the fire.

The corporation’s Managing Director, Alhaji Ibrahim Shall, told NAN that the fire was restricted to the studio and control room.

Shall said no casualty was recorded in the inferno and that the cause has yet to be ascertained.

He said the inferno was detected by a mechanic on duty at the station.

Shall said that a report on the incident had already been forwarded to the state Ministry of Information, adding that further action would be determined by the final assessment of the damage.

“The only casualty and they are the most important casualties – the studio and the control room – that are badly damaged.

“In the studio we have our cameras and the air conditioners. Then in the control room that is where we have a lot of machines; the transmission machines and the computers that we use to transmit with other things.’’

Shall, however, said that the timely mobilisation of the fire extinguishers installed at the station had tremendously saved the situation from getting out of hand before the arrival of the fire service personnel.

He regretted that the station might be off air, but assured the public that necessary measures were being put in place to ensure speedy restoration of normal transmission.
