FG to build one million affordable houses annually

DETERMINED to reduce the 17 million housing deficit Nigerians are facing, the Federal Government has stated its commitment to building one million affordable houses annually for the people.

It said providing decent shelter for the people amounts to giving them dignity.

Speaking on Monday while inaugurating the first phase of 288 housing units out of the 575 national housing scheme in Bauchi State, at Dunga village on the Bauchi-Jos road, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms Amal Pepple, reiterated the Goodluck Jonathan administration’s desire to provide decent accommodation for Nigerians.

Pepple lamented that government at all levels in the country would have provided enough shelters for Nigerians if not for the fact that many housing programmes in the past were abandoned by successive administrations.

She stated that the basic needs of every human being was shelter, declaring that,”when you provide shelter for the people, you give them dignity because a good shelter makes one live healthy life as well as enjoy conducive environment.”

While assuring that the Federal Government would assist the Bauchi State government in providing shelter for the people of the state, the minister commended the state governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, for allocating enough land for the construction of the housing project.

In his address, the Managing Director of Federal Mortgage Bank, Mr Gimba Ya’u Kumo, informed that the bank had given out a loan of N5.9 billion for the construction of various housing scheme in Bauchi State alone.

He stated that the Dungarees housing estate comprised of two and three bedroom flats and called on the private sector to embrace the national housing scheme.

Also speaking on the occasion, Governor Yuguda commended the Federal Government for building 1,000 housing units at Gubi Dam, informing that the state government had bought over the housing units.

He added that the state government had given another land in Dunga for the construction another 1,000 housing units of two and three bedrooms.
