THE Federal Government has informed that it will soon hand over the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium (ATBS) in Bauchi to the Bauchi State government.

This was revealed to Tribunesport by the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Alhaji Mohammad Adamu Lassi in an exclusive interview, adding that a letter to this effect had been sent to the state government.

The decision, according to Lassi, was a welcome development following the state’s investment in sport development, adding that the Isa Yuguda-led administration in the state had made huge investment in the sport sector.

“Through the efforts of Governor Isa Yuguda, the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium is to be handed over to the Bauchi State government. Two weeks ago or thereabout, we received a letter from the presidency that the stadium now belongs to the state. We are now preparing for the handing over of the stadium back to the state. We are happy to have it back,” the commissioner said.

According to Lassi, the Yuguda administration deserved to take over the stadium from the Federal Government considering its huge financial commitment on the stadium, especially in 2009 when it was selected as a venue for the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, hosted by Nigeria.

“Bauchi would not have hosted the World Cup if not for Governor Yuguda’s financial commitment which ensured that the stadium met FIFA requirement. The world body even acknowledged this feat and even gave His Excellency a special award for this,” he said.

He noted that the FIFA Goal Project 2 to be built in Bauchi, the state capital, which was facilitated by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), would be of tremendous benefit to the state, adding that it would not only provide employment opportunities to people of the state but also provide opportunity for the people to acquire technical knowledge of the game of football.

He added that considering the benefit of the project, the state government had donated vast land on which the project would be built, submitting that, “Bauchi State deserves the FIFA Goal Project 2.”
