Bauchi produce sesame worth N4bn in 2012 --- Yuguda

Gov. Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State has said that farmers in the state produced and sold sesame seed worth N4 billion in 2012.
Yuguda made this known during the 2013 farming season fertiliser sales to farmers in Kafin Madaki town, Ganjuwa Local Government Area (LGA) in Bauchi, where his deputy, Alhaji Sagir Saleh, represented him.
He said that 2,500 sesame farmers would be trained and that seeds worth N800,000 would also be purchased and distributed to farmers in the state.
He further said that the state government had established agro-allied industries for groundnut oil extraction in all the 20 local government areas of the state.
“The state has put in place medium agro-allied industries across the 20 LGAs and 20 machineries were imported from India and distributed to all the LGAs.
“Recently, USAID rated our state the largest producer of sesame of high quality that meets international standard.
“In 2012, 1.2 million farmers (wet season) and 120,000 farmers (dry season) received their subsidised seeds and fertiliser through their mobile phone and scratch cards.
“Our target is to reach two million farmers in 2013.’’
Yuguda said that 22 units of MF373 tractors were purchased at the cost of N195 million.
Meanwhile, another 28 set of tractors with their implements were also refurbished by Steyr Nigeria Limited at the cost of N55 million, he said.
Also speaking, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Bukar Tijjani, said Bauchi State had registered 539,657 farmers, the highest by any state, since the inception of Growth Enhancement Support (GES).
