AREESTED SUSPECT

The Nigeria Police yesterday arrainged seven suspected terrorists allegedly behind the bombing of a divisional police headquarters and several banks in Bauchi State.

Force spokesman, CSP Frank Mba made this known in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP where he disclosed that the suspects,including Usman  Sani, Abdulrahman Musa, Mahmud Mohammed,Kabir Mohammed, Umar Danjuma, Ibrahim Musa Abba  and Abdullahi Lawan were arriagned on a 13-count charge of various offences under the Terrorism Prevention Act, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2011.

The suspects were alleged to have been behind the bombing and robbery of Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Alkaleri Branch in Bauchi State, on 8th July, 2011 during which the sum of N17, 830,136 was said to have been stolen from the Bank.

The suspects who were also accused of attacking and bombing the Alkaleri Divisional Police Headquarters also attacked and robbed Intercontinental Bank and Guarantee Trust Bank, both in Azare, where a total sum of N36, 446,750 was allegedly carted away.

“The charges indicated that the suspects at different operations killed four persons, including three (3) Police officers. They were also charged with being in possession of assorted types of dangerous arms and IED materials,” Mba said.

He disclosed that the suspects could not take their plea as they had no legal representation before the court, a situation, he said, the Court considered fundamental to warrant the adjournment of the case to a date in April, to enable the suspects secure legal representation.

The suspects are expected to take their plea when the Court resumes trial on the adjourned date – 10th April, 2013.
Meanwhile, the seven suspects have been remanded in prison custody to enable them secure the services of legal practitioners of their choice, in exercise of their fundamental human rights.

The Force spokesman who applauded the effort of Nigerians in the fight against terrorists called for more cooperation from well-meaning individuals to enable the security agencies put an end to violent crimes.

He urged individuals to volunteer useful information to help track criminals. “The IGP hereby reassures the public that the police would do everything within its ability, to ensure that the suspects are diligently and conclusively prosecuted; as this will serve as a deterrent to all criminally minded persons in the country.

The Force also uses this medium to appeal to well-meaning Nigerians to assist security agencies, especially, the Nigeria Police, to volunteer useful information about the activities of criminal groups or individuals, to assist in the fight against crime and criminality.

The terrorist were reported to have in a commando style attacked the banks after their earlier attempt to rob another bank in the Bauchi metropolis was foiled. They were said headed to another bank about 60 kilometres from the metropolis and successfully raided the bank and carting away with large sums of money.

An eye-witness reportedly recounted how the terrorists first attacked the police station with explosives and so while the security operatives were busy trying to arrest and repel the attack in the police station, the terrorists reportedly had a field day raiding the bank with little or no distractions. An eye-witness said the bandits even littered the streets of Alkaleri with money stolen from the bank.
