A Chief Magistrates’ court sitting in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, on Wednesday, ordered the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop the ongoing plans to conduct local government and state congresses, just as the party fixed today and Saturday, April 26 respectively to conduct the local and state congresses.
Ten members of the party had dragged the party before the district court, alleging that there were frauds and irregularities in the ward congresses in the state and asked the court to order all factions to maintain the status quo.
The applicants, through the counsel, Usman Baffa Darazo, sued the party, Bauchi State Congress Committee and the chairman of the committee, Dr Almajiri Geidam, as defendants in the case, seeking the leave of the court to stop the congresses pending the determination of the motion on notice.
The presiding judge, Isa Mohammed, ruling on the matter, restrained the defendants from proceeding with the party’s local and state congresses, directing that they should maintain the status quo and not act on the ward congresses conducted in the state between April 6 and 9 pending the determination of the motion on notice.
He, however, adjourned the matter till Monday, April 28 and ordered that the defendants be served within 48 hours.
When contacted on the judgement, the state acting Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Baba Abubakar Suleiman, told journalists that he was not aware of the court order, saying that, “we just finished a stakeholders’ meeting. We didn’t hear anything like that.”
Meanwhile, the party in the state has fixed Thursday and Saturday, April 26 for its local and state congresses in the state.
This was revealed to journalists by Alhaji Suleiman at the stakeholders’ meeting of the party in Bauchi, saying that every arrangement had been concluded to hold the congresses today and Saturday.
He said the local government congress would take place in all the 20 local government areas of the state on today and arrangements had already been made for the congress.
