THE 20 local government caretaker committee chairmen in Bauchi State have been urged to imbibe the culture of due process in their service delivery initiatives to the people at their council areas.

Giving the advice during an awareness and interactive session organised by local government officials on e-payment by the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa Gwaram, stated that doing this would promote good governance in their respective local councils.

Gwaram noted that it was the avowed policy and commitment of the Governor Isa Yuguda-led administartion in the state to entrench and strictly observe rule of law and good governance at all levels of government in the state with a view to ensuring that dividends of democracy were provided for people of the state.

The Special Adviser, while recounting the damage that corruption has done to the nation, assured that Bauchi State government was determined to work with all the anti-corruption agencies in the country to fight all forms of corruption in the state.

He urged the council officials across the state to emulate the exemplary leadership style of Governor Yuguda  and shun corruption, challenging them to embark upon meaningful  projects that have direct bearing on the people at the grassroots level.

Gwaram stated that the local government administartion in the country was facing economic distress as a result of the “preponderance of expenditure on recurrent rather than on capital expenditure which trend does not really promote development from below.”

To overcome the cash constraints they were facing, he advised that local government councils in the state should strenghten their internally generated revenue sources so as to depend less on federal allocation, adding that it was only with this that they could bring sustainable development to their people.
