| May 27, 2014 More

Alhaji Bala Abdulahi, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Science and Technology, said on Monday said that the state government had taken steps to make its people computer-literate.

Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the government had put in place measures to ensure that Bauchi people had at least a working knowledge of Information Technology (IT) because “people everywhere must be IT-compliant”.

He said that Gov. Isa Yuguda had expressed his commitment to the goal, and even made it a cardinal principle of the administration.

The commissioner said that so far, the ministry, in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), had trained about 150 unemployed graduates on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) between 2012 and 2013.

“We plan to set up an ICT centre in the ministry for the training of civil servants and corporate organisations as well as members of the public.

“We are also making arrangements to set up Internet cafes in all the 20 local government areas of the state as part of the strategy to take technology to the grassroots, “Abdullahi said.

According to him, people of all ages must embrace ICT to be able to compete favourably in the present technology-driven world.

He said that ICT had become the global driver of socio-economic development, stressing that it was as vital as water and electricity, due to its indispensable status in almost every aspect of human life.

“Becoming computer-literate is very crucial because almost everything has been computerised globally and we do not want to be left behind.

“Using ICT gives us access to a variety of services with ease; we have to be passionate about technology in our daily activities.

“When we encourage ICT, we are literally developing our economy and ensuring self-reliance.

“There is the need therefore, to explore the opportunities and benefits offered by the use of online and mobile services and other products among our local communities,” Abdullahi said.

Abdullahi said that the ministry will soon carry out massive awareness campaign to boost the usage of ICT content and applications to increase knowledge among the people.

He said that this step would enable the people to partake in exploiting ICT potential and would also motivate their competitiveness, efficiency as well as transparency in carrying out their tasks
