The rate of criminality in the state which in some instances had led to loss of lives, Bauchi state Government has placed a restriction order on the operation of motorcycles in the state.

A statement from the Office of the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ishola Michael Adeyemi contained that, “henceforth, operators of motorcycles in the state are have been banned from carrying passengers between 6pm and 6am until further notice.”

The statement observed that, “most of the reported criminal activities that occurred in Bauchi metropolis and other parts of the state were committed by persons riding on motorcycles. This observation has prompted persistent calls from some concerned citizens of the state for the outright banning of the use of motorcycles especially in Bauchi metropolis.”

The statement which copies was made available to news men Wednesday contained that, “after a dispassionate appraisal of the calls vis-à-vis the need to allow persons engaged in commercial use of motorcycles to continue to earn their living without hindrances, Government has resisted the option of outright banning of the use of motorcycles. Rather the Government has chosen the option which enhances security as well as allows legitimate use of motorcycles.”

The statement stated further that, “consequently, Government wishes to place restriction on the operation of motorcycles in Bauchi metropolis, operators of private and commercial motorcycles in Bauchi metropolis are hereby banned from carrying passengers from 6am to 6pm.”

Government however assured members of the general public that the measure is entirely a child of necessity and appealed to the people to view the measure for what it is and to cooperate with security agencies who have been directed to take prompt action towards ensuring compliance with the order.
