Bauchi Re-Opens Poly

| May 28, 2012 More

Bauchi โ€” The Bauchi State government has ordered the Governing Council of the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic to reopen the school today. This is coming barely one week after the school was closed down indefinitely. Closure of the school by the government, it was gathered, was to pave way for the construction of a specialist hospital in the school.

The action had led to protest by teachers and students of the institution, during which the teachers gave the state government a three week ultimatum to reopen the school or face indefinite industrial action. The National Union of Bauchi State Students also threatened to organize a one million march against the government if it does not re-open the school by today.

Last week, the state House of Assembly intervened and urged the state government to re-open the school, just as it directed teachers and students to sheath swords. The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Isa Yuguda, Ishola Michael Adeyemi, told Daily Trust that the government decided to re-open the school, following the intervention of many prominent persons, and the remorse shown by the students.

State Secretary of the Joint Action Committee of the Academic and Non Academic Staff of all tertiary institutions in Bauchi State, Comrade Abdullahi Yalwa said they were not objecting to the construction of the specialist hospital, but that they were against the way and manner they were asked to vacate the school.
