Bauchi Polls – Opposition Parties Unite Against PDP

| February 25, 2013 More

Opposition political parties, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), have met and unanimously decided on the best way to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming local government councils’ election in Bauchi State.

Speaking with journalists separately in Bauchi Sunday, the Chairmen of CPC and ANPP, Alhaji Aliyu Saidu and Alhaji Sani Shehu respectively, and the spokesman of the ACN, Nasiru Ibrahim Darazo, confirmed the development.

Sa’idu of CPC said: “During our meeting, we have decided that in each local government council, we will support a popular candidate from any political party to contest against the PDP candidate in order to break the tradition of the way the ruling party used to manoeuvre and sweep all seats during council polls.”

Speaking in the same vein, Shehu of ANPP said: “Even though we resolved to support the candidate from any political party that is popular but with the merger plan of all the opposition parties, if completed, will address the problem because the popular candidate will come from the new party which we will all support and the merger will address many differences that may occur even though we planned it in good faith and we are determined to succeed.”

Also speaking, Darazo explained that “after we have agreed to support any candidate from the three parties, later APGA applied to join us and we have accommodated them under the current arrangement.”

However, the state Assistant Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Bashir Bukar Rimin Zayam, said: “We heard about their plans but we are ahead of them because the whole Bauchi state is entirely a PDP state , and the party has done a lot to provide the dividend of democracy to the citizenry and we have the support of the entire people of Bauchi state.”

“Since Politics is all about people, we believe we have the support of all Bauchi people, we are determined to beat them hands down, even though we know they will cry at the end as usual, you know politicians don’t accept defeat easily, but we have no fear we will defeat them and we will successfully cross the bridge when we reach there,” he added.

No date has been fixed for the election but the state government and the State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) had indicated their intention to conduct the council polls this year.
