Bauchi: Policeman, 2 ladies killed in bank robbery attack

A mobile policeman and two ladies were, on Monday night, killed while a female hawker was injured when some gunmen attacked a branch of First Bank Plc and the divisional police station in Darazo, the headquarters of Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The attack, the Nigerian Tribune learnt, occurred at about 9:00 p.m. when the gunmen stormed the town,  headed for the bank and attempted to burn down the police station.

The female victims, who were said to be hawkers, it was further gathered, were hit by stray bullets during exchange of fire between policemen mobilised to repel the robbery attack and the gunmen, whose number could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, while the mobile policeman, a corporal, was killed in action.

Confirming the robbery attack to journalists in Bauchi, on Tuesday, the Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Hassan Mohammed Auyo, told newsmen that the police were mobilised as soon as the gunmen stormed the town, saying that the police were able to prevent the gunmen from robbing the bank and burning down the police station in the town, adding tat the robbers fled the town as they were unable to withstand police superior firepower.

 “The gunmen stormed the town around nine o’clock in the night and attacked Darazo Divisional Police Station and First Bank. Our men were able to repel the bank robbery and burning of the police station.”

“There was a fight between the attackers and our men, and in the course of exchanging fire with the hoodlums, our mobile policeman, a corporal, was killed, while stray bullets hit three female hawkers. Two of them died in the hospital where they were rushed to for treatment and the remaining one is currently receiving treatment in the hospital,” the PPRO said.

While saying that the police had commenced investigation into the armed robbery attack, Auyo added, however, that, “no arrest has been made up till this moment but our investigation team are in Darazo over the incident.”

Reacting to the incident, the chairman, Caretaker Committee of Darazo Local Government Area of the state, Alhaji Kabiru Sade, told journalists that normalcy had since been restored to the town , noting that the situation was brought under control and advised people to go about their normal businesses without fear.

He assured that his council would be responsible for all the medical expenses of the victim currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
