Bauchi – Property estimated at N3 billion were destroyed in Bauchi State during the 2012 flood disaster, which affected nearly all the 20 local government areas, an official said.

Amb. Adamu Aliyu, the Chairman, Bauchi State Committee on the Distribution of Federal Government N400 million to victims of 2012 Flood Disaster, made the fact known on Wednesday in Itas, headquarters of Itas Gadau Local Government Area.

The chairman made the statement while exchanging views with Alhaji Yau Ibrahim, the Chairman of the council during a tour of the area.

Aliyu, currently on authentication tour of Bauchi Northern Senatorial District, said the damage occurred in farmland, houses, animals and other valuables destroyed by the flood disaster.

He said that the committee, made up of traditional rulers, government officials and other relevant agencies was in the area to determine the number of victims and property destroyed.

Aliyu said that N400 million was already in the coffers of the state government, hence the formation of the committee to enable the victims to benefit from the fund. He said that the fund would be distributed to the beneficiaries after the verification in the presence of district and village heads to ensure fairness to all.

The chairman called on victims whose farmlands were situated along flood-prone areas to plant early maturing crops to avoid the 2012 situation where most crops that were about to mature were washed away.

He promised that the committee would ensure that the fund reached the beneficiaries and called on chairmen of the affected councils to cooperate with members of the committee.

Responding, the chairman of the council applauded the composition of the committee and expressed optimism that all victims would be fairly treated.

Ibrahim said that the council had earlier assisted the victims with relief materials immediately after the disaster and commended the Federal Government for the gesture.
