Bauchi Govt Procures N2.2bn Fertiliser for Farmers

To enhance agricultural activities and ensure food security in Bauchi state, the state government has procured fertiliser worth about N2.2 billion for sale to farmers during the current farming season.

The state commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Tasiu Mohammed disclosed this at a ministerial media briefing to mark Governor Isa Yuguda’s 1st year anniversary in his office.

He explained that in 2012 farming season, a total of 5,000 metric tonnes of urea has already been procured at a total cost of N580 million, while 1,500 metric tonnes of NPK has been blended by Bauchi Fertiliser blending plant.

Tasiu said in addition to this, 14,800 metric tonnes of fertiliser valued at N1.6 million were allocated to Bauchi state by the Federal Government.

He further explained that in order to meet up the demand of fertiliser by farmers, efforts are being intensified to procure fertiliser chemicals for the production of NPK fertiliser to meet up increasing demand for the commodity.

The commissioner also disclosed that pest control chemicals worth about N22 million have been procured for the control of outbreak of pests such as grasshoppers and army worms, among others in the state.

“In realisation of the economic potentials of cotton, the state has established a Cotton Development Committee (CDC) under the chairmanship of the deputy governor, Alhaji Sagir Aminu Saleh, and myself as deputy chairman”, he stated.

To this end, he further disclosed that over 1,000 farmers were expected to cultivate cotton on over 1,000 hectares in the current farming season, adding that, already, 52 Agric Extension workers were trained at Sebore farms in Yola, Adamawa.

He said a similar training would be organised at local government level for cotton producers, while government would also provide incentives to cotton producers in the form of soft loan, seeds, agrochemicals and sprayers.
