Bauchi Govt Evacuates 200 Girls From School

In its response to the recent attack on Government Girls Secondary School, Yana in Shira Local Government Area of Bauchi State by unknown gunmen, in which a five-year old girl was killed Sunday, the Bauchi state government has ordered the immediate evacuation of over 200 students of the school.
This is following the abduction of 234 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State on Monday, April 14, 2014 by gunmen suspected to be members of the terrorist sect, Boko Haram.
Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed Aminu, told newsmen in the state that the students were evacuated to enable the school authorities carry out renovation work on the building burnt down during the attack.
Aminu said, “the state government orders the evacuation of the students to enable renovation work on the buildings destroyed but the evacuation is temporary, because they will only stay away for three weeks.”
According to him, “the only students in the school now are the final year students writing WAEC exams, because the JSS 1-3 and SSS 1-2 are on holiday, so we want to use this period to renovate the destroyed building to enable
them learn in conducive environment when they resume.”
He denied the evacuation of the students been connected to the attack launched in the area on Sunday, assuring that adequate security measures have been put in place by the state government to ensure the security of not only the students of GGSS Yana but all the schools in Bauchi State.
The Police Public Relations Officer of Bauchi State Command, DSP Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, said the gunmen set ablaze the staff quarters, school bus of GGSS, Yana, eight-man block rank and file quarters, masts of MTN, Glo and Etisalat.
Mohammed said the hoodlums also attacked a branch of the First Bank and destroyed the vault, adding that 15 vehicles were destroyed at the Shira LG secretariat, as well as its conference hall.
According to the statement, “Apart from the five-year old girl who was burnt to death, there were no other casualties, as all the students are intact, while the private vehicle of the school principal was taken away by the hoodlums. Combine security forces are on their trail.”
