| April 10, 2013 More

Bauchi โ€” The Academic Staff Union of College of Education, Azare (COEASU) in Bauchi State, yesterday suspended the strike it embarked upon two months ago over the reappointment of the registrar of the college, Aliyu B. Shehu.

In February, the union embarked on strike over what it called insensitive attitude of the management and governing council of the institution, and the re-appointment of the registrar. But the governing council of the college said Shehu was qualified for reappointment and issued termination letters to 194 striking lecturers.

Announcing the suspension of the strike yesterday, chairman of the union, Comrade Sanusi Ibrahim Chinade, said the decision followed the intervention of the Katagum Emirate Council which met and discussed the matter with Governor Isa Yuguda.

Chinade said the governor told the emirate council that he was not aware that 194 lecturers were sacked and that he directed the Head of Service to meet with the governing council to solve the problems.

“We have seen commitment from the side of the government because the state Head of Service has visited Azare several times over the matter and held discussions with the Wazirin Katagum,” he said.

He said it was in view of the development that they decided to suspend the strike. He however added that the management of the college has not yet withdrawn the termination letters it gave them.
