Bauchi Assembly Stops Recall of Suspended Lawmaker

| July 9, 2013 More

Bauchi โ€” The Bauchi State House of Assembly has asked the state High Court presided by Justice Aliyu Baba Usman, to stay execution on the judgment recalling suspended female lawmaker, Rifkatu Samson Danna, representing Bogoro constituency in the assembly.

Counsel to the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Barrister Haruna Mahmud Yakubu, filed a notice of appeal and a motion to stay execution on the judgment that ordered Rifkatu Samson Danna to return to the House.

When the case was mentioned yesterday, Barrister Yakubu, asked the court to stay execution of the judgment, pending the determination of the appeal filed at the Federal High Court, Jos. But counsel to Danna, Mr Femi Falana, told the court that the Assembly only wants Danna to continue to stay at home, and asked the court to enforce the areas of the judgment recalling her back to the Assembly.

Falana argued that following Danna’s suspension, her constituency is not being represented, urging the court to enforce her return. He said there were fears that the tenure of Danna would finish before the Court of Appeal determines the appeal due to the large number of cases waiting to be entertained. After listening to both parties, Justice Aliyu Baba Usman adjourned the suit to July 25 for ruling.
