Auto crash, flood claim 9 in Bauchi •As women allegedly dump 2 kids in fish ponds

WHILE Muslim faithful were celebrating this year’s Eid-el-Fitri on Thursday across the country, tradegy struck at Durum village in Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State as seven people were burnt beyond recognition, while five others sustained varying degree of injuries in a multiple auto crash.

The accident, the Nigerian Tribune gathered, occurred at about 12.50 p.m, when a Sharon station wagon ran into an Opel Vectra, which broke down in the middle of the road due to the locking of its steering, leading to an outbreak of fire.

According to an eyewitness’ account, another Opel Vectra, which was following the Sharon ran into the flame as the driver was said to be unable to meander his ways to avoid the raging fire and was also razed by the fire.

“The accident occurred when the driver of an Opel Vectra vehicle got stuck in the middle of the road because his steering got locked. As the driver was trying to get the vehicle off the road, the Sharon station wagon heading to Kano hit the Vectra and burst into flames. Another Vectra vehicle which was coming behind the Sharon bus also ran into the fire,” an eyewitness told journalists.

Meanwhile, flooding recorded in the first week of August has claimed one life and damaged no fewer than 14 houses in Bauchi metropolis, an official has said.

Mallam Inuwa Bello, the Head of Emergency Operations, Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Thursday.

He said that state assessment team who visited the affected areas, confirmed the death of a nine-year-old girl at Shekal ward in the state capital.
Bello said that plans were under way to assist the victims with food and other essential items.

Similarly, male children between the ages of three and four were on Thursday dumped into a fish pond on the Dumi Road, near the Nigerian Railway Corporation quarters in Bauchi metropolis by two unknown women on a tricycle, even as one of the victims died before help could come their way.
