10 Killed in Borno – Azare Youth Rise Against Gunmen

Bauchi and Maiduguri โ€” Residents of Chibok town in southern part of Borno State yesterday said at least 10 people have been killed on Saturday and many houses burnt to ashes. And in Azare town of Bauchi State six persons have been killed and several others injured when hundreds of youths and security operatives rounded up the gunmen believed to be responsible for the killing of prominent people in town.

For the Borno incident, there was no official confirmation from both the police and the military but a source, who lost two of his brothers in the night raid, confirmed that ten people have been killed.

A local government official at Chibok who craved for anonymity confirmed that ten people have been killed and many others escaped with various injuries, some life threatening.

In Azare town of Bauchi State, six persons have been killed while several others injured when hundreds of youths and security operatives rounded up the gunmen believed to be responsible for the killing of prominent people in the town. The incident came two days after a member of the Katagum Emirate, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Shehu, was killed by unknown gunmen in front of his residence in Azare.

Security sources were not able to confirm the casualty figures recorded but many residents said six people were killed and several injured. All the victims were taken to the Federal Medical Center, Azare.

Residents said after the killing of Majidadin Katagum, religious and community leaders sensitized their people on the need to be courageous to chase and arrest any suspect found with arms and ammunitions or whenever they a gunshot is heard they should pursue the gunmen instead of everybody running away for safety. They said one motorcycle rider grabbed one of the gunmen and as they struggled two other gunmen the motorcycle rider to death. Then one man in a Mercedes Benz car hit one of the armed men, an action that led the other gunmen to shoot the car driver.

Soldiers and other security operatives arrived the scene of the incident later shoot two armed men to death while the other one entered a house and climbed a tree shooting from on top of the tree which lasted several hours before he came out and he too was killed by security operatives. Residents said two security personnel were killed during the exchange of fire between the gunmen and the security men and several were injured with gunshots during the exchange of fire.

Security sources confirmed the incident and pledged to give the detail after investigation.

Bauchi State Police Commissioner Mohammed Ladan could not confirm the incident as he did not respond to calls and text messages made to him to comment on the incident.

Meanwhile, a police station, immigration, State Security Service (SSS) and customs offices where reportedly razed down yesterday when suspected members of the Boko Haram sect wreaked havoc on Gamboru, a border town between Nigeria and Cameroon in northern part of Borno State.

Unconfirmed sources said some security personnel, civilians and insurgents have been killed during the gun duel which lasted for over five hours. It was gathered that dozens of people, including women and children have fled to neighbouring villages in Cameroon in search of safety.

Locals said three churches, a vaccination clinic and some communication masts were also vandalized when a group of about 50 rampaging Boko Haram insurgents descended on the bubbling border town around 9am.

They said GSM communication was completely grounded, a development which compounded the pandemonium in the town.

Gamboru is a border town and is 150 kilometers north of Maiduguri, the state capital. The town had witnessed series of attacks in recent times.
